Or if you're not currently subscribed to anything, are there any defunct publications you miss?

Yes - the old PC Magazine. I think it's still published in an online format, but it's not the same. Oh, and Computer Shopper. LOL

Compute, RUN, and Dr Dobbs, to name a few.

    Hello Arelor!

** On Wednesday 03.04.24 - 02:42, Arelor wrote to Margaerynne:

Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine is very hit and miss. It virtually
has no heroic or high fantasy (to be honest, barely any publication does). I don't think you can't go very wrong with this one, but to be honest,
with the ammount of story submissions they get (in the order of 700-900
per month) I suspect they could be publishing better stuff.[...]

The Asimov magazine, it pains me to tell, is junk. As in, you could not
pay me to be published there. [...]

The Grantville Gazettes deserves a special mention. They used to have an annex section in which they would publish fantasy and scfi military fiction. I never got to read it but I remember them buying stories that were quite average and passing on very good stuff. [...]

Hmmmm.. sounds like it might be time for you to fill the void
and give the good material that others are passing up on an
    audience. ;)

I am not optmistic. The magazines I know which were trying to do something interesting and new are all of them closed today.

Whoops, looks like it's been a minute since I've logged in.

Overall a great response, thank you. I hadn't considered Linux/tech-specific publications, but I'll certainly give that one a look.

My relationship with printed literary publications is not great, but for what is worth:

And thank you again for thre breakdowns of each magazine. Kind of a bummer, to
be honest, but I do enjoy the annual best-of complations so I might just stick to those for now.

Is anyone here subscribed to any good monthly/quarterly magazines?

I was thinking about getting a Clarkesworld of F&SF sub, partially for the feel of it and partially to keep up with what's current in sf, but I haven't actually bought a magazine in 10+ years

Are your interests confined to fantasy and science fiction? I have a couple of literary journals that I'd recommend - admittedly Australian.

I subscribe to Retrofan magazine. It talks about old tv shows and pop culture from back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. It talks about stuff like Super-Friends, Man from U.N.C.L.E, Batman. Stuff like that. Mostly Pertaining to Television.
